Experience pottery in Thimi which is also known as a traditional center for pottery in Kathmandu Valley. Close to Bhaktapur, it's an ideal day trip, showcasing age-old crafts and bustling streets filled with skilled artisans. Pottery has deep roots in Nepali culture, serving various daily and ceremonial purposes. 

Pots played an integral part of everyday life for storage, carrying water, lamps and decorative purposes. In Newar traditions, clay pots hold special significance, symbolizing cultural practices. For instance, the making of traditional rice wine, or aila, relies on specialized clay containers. With the introduction of the Ceramic Project, the artisans in Bhaktapur has expanded the craft's horizons. Though natural colors are used for a smooth finish, most products retain their timeless terracotta hue.

Despite modern influences, the potters of the valley remain committed to their craft. Their dedication has been able to sustain centuries-old tradition till date. Thimi's rich pottery heritage offers a captivating glimpse into Nepali pottery and ceramics artistry, that shapes the region’s cultural identity.

Experience Overview

You will be welcomed in the trainer’s family home where you will be received in a traditional way by the trainer. Starting from the basics, you will be given a brief introduction about your trainer and the history of pottery. Then you will get your hands on the potter’s wheel and start to get familiar with the mud. With friends and families or by yourself, and get your hands dirty! You can take your time to set your hands to make your own piece of pottery where the trainer will guide you along the way. You will be provided with the all the clay, tools, and any materials you need to create your own artwork.
