In the valley, wood carving has always been a source of pride because it is so ingrained in its history and culture. Wood carvings, which have their origins in Hindu and Buddhist texts, come in a wide range of styles, including floral patterns, animals, deities, and geometric shapes. Most of the unusual crafts you see in the streets are produced by the Newari ethnic minority, which is mostly concentrated in the valley. Old houses in cities like Bhaktapur and Bungamati display the distinctive Newari art.
Along with other monuments and architectural wonders, woodcarving has significantly enhanced the Kathmandu Valley's aesthetic charm. The superb craftsmanship of the local artists is evident in the accuracy of the minute details and the elegance of designs that adorn temples and homes, adding to the valley's overall splendor. The Indrasvara Mahadev temple, built in 1396, is one example of this ancient craft's historical history, which dates back to the 13th century in Nepal. Woodcarving has flourished over the years, especially during the Malla and Licchavi dynasties from the 13th to the 18th century.
Enter the realm of traditional Newari art and experience the fun of wood carving in Bhaktapur's ancient surroundings. This four-hour session, led by a local expert, immerses you in the experience by educating you on the cultural significance of wood carving in Nepal, demonstrating tool skills, and helping you finish your piece. Your efforts are rewarded with a delicious Newari lunch and a well-earned respite. Take home your exquisitely carved object that has been embellished with Newari art at the end of the session; it will make a thoughtful present or the ideal adornment for your home.
When you get to Bhaktapur, you will be passing through the ancient streets of the pottery square. Along with the craftsmen's typical greeting, the lovely ambiance of the workshop, which is filled with exquisite woodcrafts, welcomes you. Then the woodcarving journey begins.
Local experts in woodcarving will be your knowledgeable counselors during the entire procedure, which will streamline it. The history of woodcarving is covered in the first lesson of the session. The instructor will then lead you through the various tools, each of which has a particular purpose in shaping the wood. The instructor will then give you a draft knot to carve the patterns into. Carve an endless knot to begin with as you eventually get used to the tools. This phase of the lesson lasts between one to one and a half hours, depending on how quickly the student moves.
Once the carving is complete and painted in the participant's choice colors, the item is prepared to be carried home. Throughout the four-hour lesson, you will engage in actual wood carving. The event also includes a delicious Newari lunch* that visitors can enjoy while taking a well-deserved break. Once your labor of love, carved with exquisite Newari art, is finished, it is a lovely gift for a loved one or simply acts as a decorative piece for your home.
You will later travel to Bhaktapur to explore the winding medieval lanes and see the resemblances of the techniques you just practiced come to life in the historic monuments. The abundance of medieval art and architecture in and around its Durbar squares will amaze you.

1. All the making process is done in a typical and traditional way hence the sitting position may not be convenient for a longer period of time; you can take short breaks in between the sessions.

Manila welcomed Puskar, my guide and me as if we were her intimate friends. She explained me about the history and cultures of Bhaktapur, which interested me. Then she taught me how to carve woods with please and patient, also with applauses. I had a lot of options in this tour but I am sure my option is the best. The guide Puskar’s explanation was also very nice. I believe I understood much better than I had learned.
The class was pleasant with a very friendly and knowledgeable instructor. I enjoyed it very much.
